Why Do We Use Roofing Flashing and How Can We Repair Them?

12/5/2017

Flashing refers to pieces of metal designed to protect the junctions between the roof and chimneys, vents or dormers, as well as roof valleys and edges. These are the vulnerable areas of a roof and it is no secret that most of the leaks are caused by faulty flashing.

Flashing is most often metallic, which means that it can get corroded. The good news is that small holes can be repaired quite easily, even as a DIY project. You need sandpaper or a wire brush to clean the corroded area, roofing cement to plug pinholes, a patch made from the same material as the flashing fixed over and covered with more roofing cement.

On the other hand if the corroded area is too large and the damage too big, you will have to consider replacing the flashing. This process is more complicated and, unless you have the necessary technical skills, you should hire a roofing specialist.

As about maintenance, you should contact a Dallas roofing contractor pro to inspect the flashing and the roof shingles annually. Problems like dry or cracked roofing cement, loose nails or holes must be repaired as quickly as possible, because resealing the flashing is considerably easier than dealing with leaks and their consequences.

Insurance companies have their own strategies in terms of what they include into their products, how they evaluate claims and how they award compensations. If you are currently looking for the insurer that provides the policy that works best for you, here are a few tips about how to gather information about insurers and how to evaluate their services:

  • Check ratings – insurance companies are regularly audited and evaluated by supervising organizations and bodies and the results are usually published in the form of ratings. Check official rating websites as well as online forums where clients rate insurers – they provide lots of valuable information;
  • Time spent in the business – go for insurance companies that have been in the business for at least a few years because durability in this case also means that they have had plenty of time to gather experience and to refine their products,

Deciding which insurance product would work best in your situation is not easy. If you feel that the responsibility of the choice is too much for you, you can turn to an insurance broker for help – brokers usually work with multiple insurance companies and they now their products very well, so they can certainly help you make the best choice.

If you find yourself in need of a new roof installation or repair, contact an established Fort Worth roofing company to see if the cost of these services may be covered under your existing home insurance policy.

Roofing shingles are among the most popular roofing materials and are also available in an incredibly wide range, from numerous different manufacturers. If you want to make sure that your roofing shingles are made by the best manufacturer, roofing Dallas TX specialists recommend a few aspects that you should check:

Replacement

  • Variety in design – roofing shingles come in various shapes and colors. The range of colors, shapes and textures offered by a manufacturer are indicative of quality and the wider the range of products offered by a shingle maker, the more likely it is that you will find the best fit,
  • Recommendations about geographical areas – quality shingle makers provide information about the level of resistance provided by their products, such as recommendations about the type of climate or region a particular product works best in (you need to use different shingles in regions that get mild climate and in areas affected by severe weather),
  • Weight – the best manufacturers provide accurate weight-related information as well to allow you to calculate the weight of the roof using the type of shingle that you like
  • Warranty – a very important aspect that you should not neglect. The best shingle manufacturers stand by their products and offer long warranty.

texes-imgThe building industry is developing very dynamically all over the country, but rapid-paced development does not make finding good construction employees easier. If you are a upstanding Dallas roofing contractor currently hiring or planning to recruit new members for your team, here are a few tips that can make the process easier:

  • Make your ad informative and attractive – the ad needs to provide information about your company, details of the job requirements and some information about what you offer, too,
  • Request and check references – reading and evaluating references is a time-intensive and energy-consuming process, but knowing what previous employers think about the candidate you are planning to hire is very important, so take your time to go through the provided references,
  • Invite candidates to multiple rounds of interviews – the first round can be handled by your recruitment specialist, but you also need construction professionals to evaluate the knowledge of the candidates. If possible, include practical tests into the recruitment process and check experience and qualifications, but don’t forget that technical skills can be learned if the candidate has the right attitude, so look for personality and willingness to learn, rather than for a specific set of skills that can be acquired during the probation period.

Exterior appeal is often considered by exceptional Dallas roofing companies experienced with home exteriors to be just as important as interior design. Whether you want to wow your neighbors or sell your house for a profit, ensuring that your exterior looks great can greatly increase your chances of achieving the desired results. Moreover, some methods will also be a lot more appealing when considering budget-related concerns.

A tidy lawn and good landscaping can go a long way toward ensuring that your home gives your friends and visitors a lovely first impression. While keeping mature trees, rose bushes and gravel paths, a concrete walkway and a tidy, well-defined garden area will make your yard stand out and show off your house in a much better light.

Another affordable and extremely appealing exterior remodeling idea has to do with improving the durability and presence of your front porch. Thicker posts clad in PVC and accented with molding can make your porch stand out and inspire more confidence as well.

The siding is also an important element to consider, along with the windows. Energy-efficient windows can replace old, less appealing designs, while concrete siding and warmer paint tones will give your home a more natural look, keeping it better protected from the elements at the same time.

These simple ideas should not only help you make your home more resilient and better looking, but also achieve all the goals you’ve set for your exterior remodeling project with just a minimal investment.

What Are the Most Practical Advantages of Gutters with Screens?

9/20/2017

When considering the installation of gutters with screens it is essential to remember why these products are considered to be so beneficial. While most homeowners might not know a lot about them, you’ll find they can make your life a lot easier from the moment you first install them.

You Can Prevent Damage

The gutter screens or guards can help prevent a lot of damage that would normally require premature gutter replacement. These screens help keep your gutters clear and can extend their life spans by years, or even decades.

Better Flow of Water

These screens are able to stop blockages that normally occur after heavy rainfall. Once blocked, your gutters could overflow, causing potentially dangerous problems for your house’s foundation and leading to the need for more frequent exterior repainting.

No More Troublesome Maintenance Tasks

Normally you’d have to clean your gutters several times each year to prevent blockages and premature damage. All that is a thing of the past if you use gutter screens. Once the screens are installed, maintenance will only be required about once every two years and your local Fort Worth roofing company is glad to help.

Fewer Pests

Leaves, twigs and other debris may carry along various pests. The insects could then turn your gutters into their breeding ground and cause significant damage in the long run. With gutter screens you no longer have to worry about that, since the increased water flow will wash away any pests along with their nests.

What Is the Proper Amount of Insulation You Should Use for an Existing Home?

9/15/2017

Should you add more insulation to your existing home? Although newer homes have a lot more insulation than those built in the past 3-4 decades, there may still be a need to add something extra, if you want to effectively reduce your energy bills. You can call a reputable roofer experienced in roofing Dallas TX homes to find out if your roof is sufficiently insulated. For anyone hoping to achieve that goal, there are several factors you’ll have to take into account when deciding what the right amount of added insulation should be:

  • How much insulation does your home already have? Unless it’s designed specifically for energy-efficiency, it probably has less than recommended, especially if the building is somewhat older.
  • Where is the home located? Depending on the geographic location and specific climate-related details, you can figure out whether you need a greater or lesser amount of additional insulation for ideal results.
  • What types of insulation should you consider? Depending on your budget, your target energy consumption goals and the difficulty of the project – especially if we’re talking about DIY – you’ll find some types are much more practical than others.
  • What type of insulation do you have installed, and what is its R-value and thickness/depth? The R-value measures the material’s insulating effectiveness with particular emphasis on thermal resistance.

These simple details can help you make the difference between cheaper and more expensive gas and energy bills this coming winter. As long as you plan your project with care and consider the best options for adding more insulation to your home, it will be easy to achieve the results you want.

Why Use Concrete Siding for Your Construction or Renovation Projects

9/11/2017

Concrete siding, also known as fiber cement, is a type of siding that’s usually almost indistinguishable from wood on the outside. However, unlike wood, fiber cement is much more resilient and featuring a far greater life span. The following are just a few of the most important benefits that could convince you to use this type of siding:

  • Concrete siding is extremely resilient, and can easily withstand extreme heat and cold as any knowledgeable Dallas roofing contractor offers his advice. It holds well against snow, ice, sun damage and temperature fluctuations that would normally cause a great deal of harm.
  • It’s the most affordable type of material capable of replacing genuine wooden siding. It requires little or no maintenance, and insurance companies will ensure lower premiums due to its greater durability and resilience.
  • This type of siding usually has a class 1A fire rating, and experts consider it to have the same level of durability as cement.
  • When it comes to its resilience in the face of rot, heat, wood-boring insects and deterioration from salt, it is far superior to wood. It also holds well against damage from UV rays.
  • The installation process is fairly simple, and most manufacturers ensure at least a 50-year warranty, which is proof of the product’s remarkable durability.

With a current price of only slightly over $8/square feet, you’ll find that – depending on what you’d like to achieve with your project – investing in concrete siding is a much more advantageous plan than using most, if not all other types of high quality siding products.
